FTC Proposed Amendment to 16 CFR 303

Feb. 27 2020

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has proposed amending 16 CFR 303, the Rules and Regulations under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act, to include the most recent ISO 2076 standard for generic fiber names.  The purpose of allowing ISO 2076 generic fiber names to be used in the US is to help manufacturers, importers and retailers develop labels that meet the requirements of multiple countries.

The FTC proposed to include the most recent version of ISO 2076:2013(E), ‘‘Textiles—Man-made fibres—Generic names,’’ Sixth edition, November 15, 2013 (ISO 2076:2013(E)), in section 303.7 of the Textile Rules and Regulations. The updated 2013 standard added seven generic fiber names that were not defined in the 2010 standard.   These include: ‘‘Chitin,’’ ‘‘ceramic,’’ ‘‘polybenzimidazol,’’ ‘‘polycarbamide,’’ ‘‘polypropylene/polyamide bicomponent,’’ ‘‘protein,’’ and ‘‘trivinyl.’’

The FTC is seeking comments to this proposal.  Written comments must be submitted to the FTC on or before March 19, 2020.
