Brazil has proposed a ban of manufacturing, importing, marketing and the use of fur, leather or feathers of animal origin in costumes and props. Definitions within the proposed law are as follows:
• Skin: “external structure of the animals' body, usually covered with fur or wool and formed by several overlapping layers”.
• Leather: “product originating exclusively from animal skin tanned by any process, consisting essentially of dermis”.
• Feather: “one of the epidermal structures of the animals' bodies that form the distinctive outer covering or plumage”.
The proposed law would ban the use of natural fur, leather and feathers (from animals) in the use of costumes, in particular for Carnival. The proposal suggests that the use of real fur, leather and feathers is no longer needed today, since synthetic materials are available without involving animal suffering and abuse.
