US FTC Votes to Retain Care Labeling Law

Aug. 5 2021

Summary:
On July 21, 2021, the Federation Trade Commission (FTC) voted 5-0 to maintain the current Care Labeling law.

Background:
In 2020, the FTC issued a notice to announce the possible repeal of the  Care Labeling laws in the United States, 16 CFR Part 423, CARE LABELING OF TEXTILE WEARING APPAREL AND CERTAIN PIECE GOODS AS AMENDED.

The law has been in effect since 1971, and has ensured that the consumer receives the most appropriate care instruction for their fabrics and apparel items. It also has provided clarity through definition of the terminology for proper care of textile products, and requires manufacturers and importers to attach labels with care instructions to garments and certain piece goods, providing instructions for dry cleaning or washing, bleaching, drying and ironing clothing.

From the time of the announcement to possibly rescind the law, the FTC received over 200 comments in favor of maintaining and improving the current law. Based on the overwhelming majority response, on July 21, 2021, the FTC voted 5-0 to maintain the current law and to reverse the course for repeal of the law.
