U.S. Customs and Border Protection Issue General Notice for Country of Origin Marking of Products of Hong Kong

On Tuesday August 11, 2020, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection published in the Federal Register a general notice with the intent to notify the public that imported goods produced in Hong Kong may no longer be marked to indicate “Hong Kong” as their origin and that they now must be marked to indicate “China” as their origin. 

A transition period has been granted for importers to implement this change. The transition period date has been set at September 25, 2020. Any goods, when entered or are withdrawn from warehouse for consumption into the United States must be marked to indicate “China” as their origin as of this transition date if these goods were imported goods produced in Hong Kong.
