Update to Industry Guides for Certain Consumer Products Regarding Use of Flame Retardant Chemicals
Jan. 18 2021
Health Canada has issued general guidance for the use of flame retardants for several product categories which are regulated under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA).
The categories include Industry Guide to Canadian Requirements for Carpets and Other Textile Floor Coverings; Industry Guide to Flammability of Textile Products in Canada; Industry Guide to Health Canada's Safety Requirements for Children's Toys and Related Products; Children’s Sleepwear: Flammability Requirement Guidelines; and Industry Guide to Futon Flammability Requirements in Canada. The guidance provides information regarding the use of flame retardants chemicals.
In brief summary, Health Canada suggests the selection of product materials that will not require a flame retardant for compliance to the flammability laws. This document also has links to the Government of Canada’s Chemicals Management Plan (CMP) and Summary of Flame Retardant Assessments pages to assist companies when making product and compliance decisions.
