South Korea Amends Phthalate Requirement under Common Safety Standard for Children’s Products

On July 19, 2021, the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) published a notice no. 2021-132 to amend phthalate requirement under Common Safety Standard for Children’s Products. A new phthalate, DIBP, will be added to the phthalate requirement, expanding the number of phthalates restricted from 6 to 7. This amendment will be effective from January 1, 2022. 

Background
Currently, synthetic resins including coatings on fibers and leather in children’s products shall comply with 6 phthalate requirements under Common Safety Standard for Children’s Products. 

Children’s products under Common Safety Standard for Children’s Products applies to products that are used by or used for children under the age of 13 and does not apply to inaccessible components of a children’s product during normal use.
