South Korea Amends Common Safety Standard for Children’s Products

The Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) announced to revise its “Common
Safety Standard for Children’s Products”. This revision included the new nitrosamine and 
nitrosatable requirements on children’s products intended to be placed in the mouth or 
mouthpieces of children’s products. In addition, the requirement of 6 phthalates is amended to
apply on all synthetic resin products, including coatings on textile or leather, irrespective of whether they are intended to be mouthed.

Major Changes in Chemical Requirement

1.    New restriction of n-nitrosamines and n-nitrosatable substances in children’s products intended to be placed in the mouth such as pacifiers, teethers, toothbrushes and balloons, and mouthpieces of children’s products.

•    Effective date: Dec 5, 2020

2.    The scope of six phthalates is extended to cover all synthetic resin products, irrespective of whether they are intended to be mouthed, including coatings on textile or leather.

•    Effective date: Jun 4, 2020

3.    The total lead content limit shall be reduced from 300 mg/kg to 100 mg/kg
