The US State of Rhode Island enacted a law that prohibits the manufacture, sale or distribution within the state of residential upholstered bedding or furniture that contains 100 ppm (0.01%) or more of an organohalogen flame retardant in 2017. The law was effective on July 1, 2019.
However, the Governor of Rhode Island has already signed bill HB 5119 (2019) to amend this flame retardant law which mainly increases the limit value for organohalogen flame retardants from 100 ppm (0.01%) to 1000 ppm (0.1%) in residential upholstered bedding or furniture and exempts certain components of these products. The amended law will be effective on January 1, 2020.
