New Canada Tent Standard Published:  CAN/CGSB-182.1 Flammability and Labeling Requirements for Tents

In April 2020, the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) published the CAN/CGSB-182.1 Flammability and Labeling Requirements for Tents. However, the current Tents Regulations under SOR/2016-185 remain in effect for tents manufactured, imported, advertised or sold in Canada. Under the current Tents Regulations, the law refers to CPAI 84 (1995 revision) for the flammability test method.  Health Canada is in the process of creating a proposal to replace the CPAI 84 method with the CAN/CGSB-182.1 standard. In the meantime, the new CAN/CGSB-182.1 standard is voluntary during this time.

A summary of CAN/CGSB-182.1 Flammability and Labeling Requirements for Tents is outlined as follows:  

• Definition of a tent is: an “outdoor shelter for people, including a shelter for both indoor and outdoor use, with a top and at least one side that may constrain the means of egress during the reasonably foreseeable use of the shelter”. It includes tents for outdoor use (including those intended for both indoor and outdoor use (both inclusive) such as camping tents, children’s tents, tent trailers, screen houses etc. It does not apply to “tents intended for indoor use only, tents that are not intended to shelter people, tents used for commercial purposes only or tents subject to the National Building Code of Canada”.
• The flammability test is conducted in the original state and after exposure to leaching and weathering (Fluorescent UV and condensation).
• The number of specimens differs from CPAI 84 and has been increased to 30 specimens.
• The test consists of a vertical flammability test for all materials including flooring. The damage length, mass loss and flaming debris is measured.  The materials shall meet either the damage length or mass loss as well as the flaming debris.  
If the flooring material fails the vertical test, it is tested in the horizontal test and must pass the horizontal flammability test.
• The standard also includes permanent Warning and Precaution statements.
