Federal Trade Commission Amends Rules and Regulations Under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act

The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (‘‘NPRM’’) published on February 18, 2020, by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has been ratified and becomes effective on November 5, 2020.

The amendments to 16 CFR 303.7 will incorporate the most recent fiber names of the relevant ISO standard, ISO 2076:2013(E). The Generic fiber name listing in 16 CFR 303 will now include seven additional generic fiber names - ‘‘chitin,’’ ‘‘ceramic,’’ ‘‘polybenzimidazol,’’ ‘‘polycarbamide,’’ ‘‘polypropylene/polyamide bicomponent,’’ ‘‘protein,’’ and ‘‘trivinyl’’ which are a part of the ISO standard. Periodic amendments to the Act such as this, attempts to close the gap between the US Textile Rules and ISO 2076 and enables a more unified approach to fiber labeling in the global marketplace.
