The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published the final guidance on the Declaration of Added Sugars on Honey, Maple Syrup, Other Single-Ingredient Sugars and Syrups, and Certain Cranberry Products. As per the final guidance and the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (also known as the 2018 Farm Bill), single-ingredient products such as honey, maple syrup, and other single ingredient sugars and syrups do not need to list the heading “Added sugars” and they do not need to list the number of grams of added sugars. However, the product will still need to list the percent Daily Value for the added sugars in the same row as normally shown, as seen in the example from the guidance pictured to the right.

The FDA will exercise enforcement discretion by permitting the use of the “†” symbol immediately after the percent Daily Value for added sugars, “…that includes a description of the gram amount of sugar added to the diet by one serving of the product and its contribution to the percent DV for added sugars in the diet.” “The symbol and footnote are not a requirement, but FDA encourages manufacturers to use them as a way to provide useful information to consumers.”

The guidance also provides clarification on the labeling requirements for dried cranberry and cranberry beverages.

The FDA intends to exercise enforcement discretion until July 1, 2021 to give manufacturers time to update product labels.
