EU Proposes to Restrict Aniline in Certain Toy Materials

The European Commission proposed to restrict aniline in certain toy materials under Appendix C to Annex II of Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC. 

Appendix C to Annex II of the Toy Safety Directive applies specific limit values for chemicals used in toys intended for use by children under 36 months or in other toys intended to be placed in the mouth. 

Proposed Requirements for Aniline: 

Substance CAS No.     Toy Materials  Limit Value
Aniline 62-53-3 Textile and leather toy materials 30 mg/kg after reductive cleavage
    Finger paints 10 mg/kg as free aniline
30 mg/kg after reductive cleavage

The proposed requirements are expected to be adopted in Q1 of 2021 and entry into force in Q3 of 2022 (18 months after publication in the Official Journal).
