California Passes “Do Not Flush” Labeling Law

Oct. 25 2021

California will require the statement, “Do Not Flush” and the INDA / EDANA do not flush symbol on disposable wipes manufactured on or after July 1, 2022. California joins multiple other states including Illinois, Oregon, and Washington that have already enacted “Do not flush” labeling laws on disposable wipes.

Governor Newsom recently signed AB 818, requiring disposable wipes sold in California to clearly list the statement “Do Not Flush” and the INDA / EDANA do not flush symbol, or a gender equivalent thereof. The labeling requirement applies to disposable wipes manufactured on or after July 1, 2022. However, disposable wipes registered with the EPA, such as disinfecting wipes, have until January 1, 2023 to update their labeling.

The labeling law applies to premoistened nonwoven disposable wipes composed entirely of or in part of petrochemical-derived fibers and likely to be used in a bathroom and has significant potential to be flushed. This includes:
Baby wipes, bathroom cleaning wipes, toilet cleaning wipes, hard surface cleaning wipes, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizing wipes, antibacterial wipes, facial and makeup removal wipes, general purpose cleaning wipes, personal care wipes for use on the body, feminine hygiene wipes, adult incontinence wipes, adult hygiene wipes, and body cleansing wipes
