Bureau Veritas Buffalo has acquired the testing capability to perform High Temperature Simulated Distillation per ASTM D6352 for automotive fluids.
Simulated Distillation (SIMDIS) by Gas Chromatography – Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) is a technique used to simulate a distillation of petroleum distillate fractions. The various boiling point differences within an oil mixture are exploited using a properly configured and specialized GC system, and the resulting data is processed using software to provide a boiling point distribution range. The result is a complete oil composition report with related boiling point fractions, without the long, cumbersome, costly, and hazardous process of a high temperature distillation.
The scope of this test method is for medium to heavy oils with boiling point distributions ranging from 174oC to 700oC, such as automotive fluids including hydraulics, lubricants, and oils. This SIMDIS profile can verify a product specification, as well as provide insight into how successful the refining process was in making it.
