ASTM International Publishes New Safety Specification for Child Safety Locks and Latches for Use with Cabinet Doors and Drawers

In February of 2021, ASTM International announced the publication of a new safety specification for Child Safety Locks and Latches for Use with Cabinet Doors and Drawers. The new specification, designated as ASTM F3492-21, provides safety and labeling requirements for child safety locks and latches used to restrict access to children to cabinet doors and drawers.
Introduction
This safety specification was developed to address incidents associated with child safety locks and latches for use with cabinet doors and drawers that were identified by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
This safety specification covers child safety locks and latches installed by a consumer to the interior of residential cabinet doors and cabinet drawers. This safety specification is not intended to cover devices installed on the exterior of a cabinet drawer or door, devices installed by professionals, or devices that are an integral part of a cabinet door or drawer.
The safety specification sets forth the following requirements:
General Requirements
• No hazardous sharp points or sharp edges
• No small part choking hazards
• Magnetic key components must not expose any small part choking hazards, sharp points, or sharp edges
• Any paint or surface coating must comply with 16 CFR 1303
• Evaluation for hazardous openings that can result in finger entrapment
Performance Requirements
• An effective strength test whereby 30 tested samples must yield an average breaking strength of 45.3lbs or greater when tested accordingly
Marking and Labeling Requirements
All child safety locks and taches shall comply with the specified requirements for warning statements on the product, packaging, and within the instructional literature.
